WCS Finals: Flash Wolves, Team Flash, RRQ, and BRU qualify for Wild Rift Icons
Southeast Asia has just locked in the four teams that will represent the region for League of Legends: Wild Rift Icons, the highest level of international competition for the mobile MOBA.
Flash Wolves from Taiwan, Team Flash from Vietnam, Rex Regum Qeon (RRQ) from the Philippines, and Buriram United from Thailand will all be going to Madrid for Wild Rift Icons after they secured the Top 4 spots in the Wild Rift Champions Southeast Asia (WCS) 2022 Finals.
Flash Wolves automatically qualified into the playoffs as the champions of the region for Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.
They started their WCS Finals campaign by defeating Vietnam's CERBERUS Esports 3-2 in the upper bracket quarterfinals to advance to the upper bracket semifinals.
Flash Wolves then outlasted team RRQ 3-2 in a nail biter best-of-five series to make it to the upper bracket finals and become the first team to qualify for Icons.
Meanwhile, Team Flash came into the WCS Finals Playoffs as the top seed from Vietnam.
They also had a strong start to the tournament, sweeping Filipino team Fennel Adversity 3-0 in a statement win in the upper bracket quarterfinals.
There they outlasted Buriram United in a hard-fought 3-2 series to make it to advance to the upper bracket finals against Flash Wolves and become Southeast Asia's second representative in Icons.
RRQ qualified for the WCS Finals Playoffs as the champions of the Philippines. The Filipino team swept Persis Esports, 3-0, in a dominant win in the upper bracket quarterfinals before getting knocked down to the lower bracket by Flash Wolves.
RRQ then faced fellow Filipino team Fennel Adversity in a rematch of the Filipino regionals in the lower bracket quarterfinals.
RRQ easily dominated the series 3-0 to move on to the lower bracket semifinals and punch their ticket to Icons.
Buriram United came into the Playoffs as the pride of Thailand.
The team faced some issues with their roster when three members tested positive for COVID-19, even being forced to field Weeravat “VVV” Baolorphet as an emergency substitute for Chakrit “Bank” Vongeveeravut, who was deemed unfit to play.
Buriram United proved that such obstacles wouldn't slow them down, sweeping Malaysian-Singaporean team SEM9 3-0 in the upper bracket quarterfinals.
However, they were defeated by Team Flash in the upper bracket semifinals, but the Thais didn't let that stop them.
Buriram United exacted revenge on the Vietnamese's second seed, CERBERUS Esports, in the lower bracket quarterfinals.
The Thai squad swept the series 3-0 to make their way into the lower bracket semifinals and become the final representative for Southeast Asia in Wild Rift Icons.
While all four of Team Flash, Flash Wolves, RRQ, and Buriram United celebrate their entry into Wild Rift’s world championship tournament, they will still continue their bid for the WCS Championship title.
On 6 May, Flash Wolves and Team Flash will face each other in the upper bracket finals while RRQ will take on Buritam United in the lower bracket semifinals.
The lower bracket finals will then take place on 7 May before the grand finals on 8 May.
The champions of the WCS Finals will claim the grand prize of US$32,000 as well as a direct seed to the Wild Rift Icons group stage. Meanwhile, the three other teams will be starting Icons from the play-in stage.
