SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (12 to 18 July):

Soh Rui Yong smashes 5,000m national record

Singapore marathoner Soh Rui Yong smashed the 10-year-old 5,000m national record at the Singapore Athletics All Comers Meet 4 on Saturday (July 17), clocking a time of 14min 44.21sec.

Shot put para-athlete earns nod as Team Singapore flag bearer at Tokyo Paralympics

Shot put para-athlete Muhammad Diroy Noordin has been chosen as the flag bearer for Team Singapore at the upcoming Tokyo Paralympics, the Singapore National Paralympic Council (SNPC) announced on Saturday (17 July).

Diroy, who won a silver medal at the 2017 ASEAN Para Games, will be taking part in his second Paralympic Games, after making his debut in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

He will be among 10 para-athletes selected so far for the Tokyo Paralympics, with SNPC set to complete its selection at the end of the month. The athletes will be taking part in six para-sports, with para-powerlifter Nur’Aini Mohamad Yasli and the tandem cycling pair of Steve Tee and Ang Kee Meng becoming the first Singapore para-athletes to feature in their respective sports at the Paralympics.

In consideration of the ongoing COVID-19 health pandemic, Singapore’s contingent will be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and will undergo an additional influenza vaccination.

Lion City Sailors signs partnership with Borussia Dortmund

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and Singapore Premier League side Lion City Sailors (LCS) have signed a two-and-a-half-year partnership which will see a series of youth development programmes, coaching, educational and professional exchanges.

The partnership will also see an annual training camp in Dortmund for the Lion City Sailors Football Academy’s elite team, with an additional training stint pencilled in for selected footballers from the academy’s scholarship programme.

“We are delighted to partner with Borussia Dortmund, a club that has shown a tremendous commitment to youth development, fan engagement and the growth of the sport in general,” said the Sailors' chief executive officer Chew Chun-Liang.

“We are an ambitious club with a vision of becoming one of the best in Asia. To get there, we must learn from the best, and in Dortmund we have found a partner that is among the best in the world."

SPL resumes with draw between Tanjong Pagar and Young Lions

The Singapore Premier League resumed on Saturday (17 July) after a near two-month break due to international fixtures, as the league's bottom two sides Tanjong Pagar United and the Young Lions battled to a 1-1 draw at the Jurong East Stadium.

The match was replayed after the original fixture on 8 May was called off due to bad weather.

The Young Lions took the lead in the 20th minute, after the Jaguars' goalkeeper Zharfan Rohaizan pulled down Zamani Zamri in the penalty area. Midfielder Hami Syahin made no mistake from the penalty spot.

However, Tanjong Pagar equalised in the 66th minute courtesy of an error by Young Lions defender Nazhiim Harman, whose botched clearance went straight to the hosts' striker Luiz Junior. The Brazilian strode forward unmarked before cleanly dispatching his goal.

The next SPL match will be the top-of-the-table clash between Albirex Niigata (Singapore) and Lion City Sailors on Friday (23 July) at the Jurong East Stadium.
