SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (12-18 October):
SPL resumes with four matches during weekend
The Singapore Premier League resumed on Saturday (17 October) after being suspended since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with two matches played without fans in the stadiums.
At Our Tampines Hub, league leaders Tampines Rovers suffered a 1-2 defeat by Hougang United. Early goals by Sahil Suhaimi (15th minute) and Farhan Zulkifli (18th) set Hougang towards victory, with Taufik Suparno (60th) pulling a goal back for the hosts.
Meanwhile at Jurong East Stadium, Balestier Khalsa eked out a 1-0 win over Tanjong Pagar United, with defender Ensar Bruncevic scoring the winner five minutes into the second half.
There were goals galore on Sunday, when Albirex Niigata (S) thrashed the Young Lions 4-0 at Our Tampines Hub, and Lion City Sailors routed Geylang International by the same scoreline.
New signing Stipe Plazibat scored twice for the Sailors (8th and 85th), while Song Ui-young (45th) and Shahril Ishak (90th) got the other goals. Meanwhile, Ryoya Taniguchi (7th), Reo Nishiguchi (13th), Ryosuke Nagasawa (65th) and Tomoyuki Doi (73rd) got the goals for Albirex.
300-odd students earn SSSC Colours Awards
Despite the cancellation of the National School Games and other inter-school activities due to the COVID-10 pandemic, the Singapore Schools Sports Council (SSSC) still handed out its Colours Awards to around 300 qualify students this year.
The council said in a media release on Tuesday (13 October) that the winners were selected based on performances in sports competitions prior to the disruptions due to the pandemic – such as Singapore Sports School’s Koen Pang winning table tennis gold at the 2019 SEA Games – from September 2019 to August 2020.
The SSSC Colours Awards will be presented to:
39 students for the Best Sportsboy and Best Sportsgirl awards across 30 sports;
250 students for the SSSC Colours Award (Distinction);
20 students for the SSSC Colours Award.
To avoid mass in-person gatherings, the awards will be presented to the recipients by their respective schools during suitable school-based ceremonies.
Live broadcasts for EFL, Carabao Cup matches
Football fans can now watch live matches of the English Football League (EFL) Championship and Carabao Cup, after agreements were reached to broadcast fixtures throughout the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.
In Singapore, more than 170 selected EFL Championship and Carabao Cup matches are expected to air on Singtel’s pay-TV and OTT platforms. Fans can catch the games on mio Sports Channels 111-113 on Singtel TV and CAST app.
For Indonesian fans, selected EFL Championship games will be aired on ChampionsTV (Pay-TV), RTV (Free to air) and Vidio (OTT).
