SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (20-26 July):

S’pore leg of FINA World Cup series cancelled

The Singapore leg of this year’s FINA Swimming World Cup series, which was to be held from 4 to 6 September at the OCBC Aquatic Centre, has been cancelled due to the continued health concerns posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) said in a media release that the current COVID-19 situation, which prohibits mass gatherings and places restrictions on worldwide travel, makes it “unattainable” to hold the annual event.

“Following discussions with (swimming’s world governing body) FINA and Sport Singapore, we have decided to cancel the FINA Swimming World Cup this year,” said SSA president Lee Kok Choy. “The health and safety of the fans, athletes and everyone involved in the running of the event is our highest priority... We are hoping that the situation will get better and looking forward to hosting the event next year.”

The event attracts more than 6,000 spectators and nearly 200 international swimmers every year. The schedule for the FINA Swimming World Cup 2021 will be announced at a later date.

Edwin Tong steps down as FAS vice-president

Newly-appointed Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong has stepped down as vice-president of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS).

In a media release on Sunday (26 July), FAS said that Tong has given notice of resignation from its council, and will also be stepping down from its executive committee with immediate effect.

Tong has served on the FAS Council since 2013, and was chairman of its legal committee in this current term. Together with FAS president Lim Kia Tong, he initiated the revamp of the S-League to the Singapore Premier League in 2018.

He was also part of the project team in the initiation of Goal 2034 plan to qualify for the World Cup by 2034.
