SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in the past week (30 September - 6 October):

Squads announced for Brazil friendlies

The squads for next week’s Brazil national football team international friendlies against African sides Senegal (10 October) and Nigeria (13 October) at the Singapore National Stadium have been announced.

Football fans could be able to see the likes of Neymar, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Wilfred Ndidi gracing the National Stadium. Tickets are now on sale at SportsHub. Here are the announced squads:

  • Brazil – Goalkeepers: Ederson (Manchester City), Weverton (Palmeiras), Santos (Athletico Paranaense). Defenders: Daniel Alves (Sao Paulo), Alex Sandro (Juventus), Renan Lodi (Atletico Madrid), Thiago Silva (Paris Saint-Germain), Marcinho (Botafago), Marquinhos (Paris Saint-Germain), Eder Militao (Real Madrid), Rodrigo Caio (Flamengo). Para Swimming Dialogue held for first time

The first Para Swimming Dialogue – which aims highlight potential opportunities that persons with disabilities can achieve through para sports – was held at the Athlete Services Centre on Saturday (5 October).

The event, jointly organised by Singapore Disability Sports Council and Borneo Motors – saw para swimmers such as Toh Wei Soong and Wong Zhi Wei sharing their sporting journeys.

Meanwhile Ferin Fu, parent of para swimmer Nicole Fu, also provided a parent’s perspective on providing support to a child involved in para sports.

Lions draw 0-0 with Jordan in friendly

Singapore national football team drew 0-0 with Jordan – ranked 59th spots above the Lions in the Fifa World Ranking – in an international friendly on Saturday (5 October), as a warm-up to two tough upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Head coach Tatsuma Yoshida used the opportunity to experiment and handed out debut international appearances to Home United’s Hami Syahin and Geylang International’s Fareez Farhan.

The Lions will play Saudi Arabia away in Buraidah on 10 October, before returning home to face Uzbekistan at the National Stadium on 15 October.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Under-22 national team will continue their preparation for the upcoming SEA Games with two friendly matches at Bishan Stadium against United Arab Emirates (9 October) and Macau (13 October). Admission for both matches is free.

Pink Ribbon Walk saw 5,000 taking part

The Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) launched the Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the Pink Ribbon Walk 2019 at the Singapore Sports Hub on Saturday (5 October).

Minister for Education Ong Ye Kung flagged off about 5,000 participants for Singapore’s largest event dedicated to raising awareness for breast cancer.

The event’s highlight was the unveiling of BCF’s “Molly Monkey Sings and Saves” nursery reminder for breast self-examination, presented in a performance with talents from MindChamps PreSchool.

Football fun for dyslexia awareness

Former Singapore international footballers teamed up with Members of Parliament and local artistes for a day for football fun at Jalan Besar Stadium on Sunday (6 October) to raise awareness for dyslexia and other Specific Learning Differences on World Dyslexia Awareness Week.

Former Lions such as Aleksandar Duric, Fandi Ahmad and Lim Tong Hai combined with MPs such as Teo Ser Luck, Chong Kee Hiong and Pritam Singh in a series of 30-minute matches against the artistes such as Andrew Lua and Nash Chandra and players from the F17 Football Academy.
