SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (4-11 October):

Nominees for Singapore Sports Awards

For the first time since 2014, the Sportsman of the Year at the annual Singapore Sports Awards will not be awarded to swimmer Joseph Schooling, after the Olympic champion – winner of the award in 2012 and from 2015 to 2019 – was not among the three nominees for the 2020 edition.

Instead, Peter Gilchrist (cuesports), Quah Zheng Wen (swimming) and Sheik Ferdous Sheik Alau'ddin (silat) will be vying for the honour during the presentation ceremony on 28 October.

Here are the nominees in other major categories:

• Sportswoman of the Year: Cheyenne Goh (ice skating), Tessa Neo (shooting), Quah Ting Wen (swimming), Cherie Tan (bowling).

• Sportsboy of the Year: Darren Chua (swimming), Muhammad Hazim Mohd Yusli (silat), Koen Pang (table tennis).

• Sportsgirl of the Year: Amita Berthier (fencing), Siti Khadijah Mohamed Shahrem (Silat), Quah Jing Wen (swimming), Arianne Tay (bowling).

• Coach of the Year: Gao Ning (table tennis), Mulyo Handoyo (badminton), Kirill Ivanov (shooting), Louise Khng (floorball), Stephan Widmer (swimming), Jason Yeong-Nathan (bowling).

Schooling makes Curry Bomb for fund-raising

The Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) has launched a fundraising campaign with its official food and beverage partner Neo Garden on Tuesday (6 October), with help from Singapore’s Olympic gold medallist Joseph Schooling.

Schooling tries his hands at preparing Neo Garden’s signature Curry Bomb dish, as the company pledged 10,000 of this dish to the fundraising campaign, which will last until 31 December.

Each Curry Bomb costs $18.80 before goods and services tax, and proceeds from the sales of the food item will go towards The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and SSA’s One Team Singapore Fund.

SCSM holds Kids’ Virtual Race

The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) held its first Kids’ Virtual Race over its Virtual Club platform over the weekend from 9 to 11 October, in celebration of this year’s Children’s Day.

Parents raced alongside their children in two different categories – 1.5 kilometres or 3 kilometres – to earn their set of badges for the event, as they recorded their runs via a tracking app.
