WEEKLY ROUND-UP: Sports happenings in Singapore (28 Dec - 3 Jan)
SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (28 December to 3 January):
Selected school sports facilities open for public booking until 14 Mar
Selected sports facilities in schools will remain open for public bookings on Saturdays and Sundays until 14 March.
This follows the announcement to open selected chargeable field and indoor sports halls under the Dual-Use Scheme (DUS) during the year-end school holidays. The public will continue to have access to the 50 chargeable fields and 119 indoor sports halls located in 135 primary and secondary schools.
The fields will be open for public use from 3pm to 7pm on Saturdays and 9am to 7pm on Sundays, while the indoor sports halls will be open for public use from 3pm to 9pm on Saturdays, and 9am to 7pm on Sundays. Public use of other DUS facilities, such as free-to-play fields and courts not within the indoor sports halls, will remain suspended.
Safe management measures will continue to be implemented in the reopened DUS facilities to minimise the risk of community transmission, and to ensure the safety of the public as well as school students and staff.
Given the evolving COVID-19 situation, Sport Singapore and Ministry of Education will jointly review the feasibility of extending public use of DUS facilities beyond 14 March.
More live events at Sports Hub planned in 2021
The Singapore Sports Hub is planning more live events on its premises in 2021, after experiments with new formats amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
It said in a media release on Tuesday (29 December) that after housing 3,000 migrant workers to help contain the spread of COVID-19, it was able to zone its arenas such as the OCBC Arena, the Indoor Stadium and National Stadium into self-sufficient bubbles, each with its own gate for entrance and exit, bathroom facilities and F&B concession stands.
After successful hosting a ONE Championship mixed martial arts fight event in October using the zoning strategy, the Hub said it has built confidence in its ability to scale and adapt the safety procedures for bigger events come 2021.
It will continue to community and sports programmes that carry both online and offline elements, thus remaining accessible to those who prefer outdoor activities, as well as those who prefer to socially distance in their homes.
