MANILA, Philippines - "Medyo masama ang loob ko sa industriya---may konting tampo---kasi I don't get the kind of respect that I think I should [be getting] with all the achievements na nagawa ko."
This, Wency Cornejo told Bulletin Entertainment and select members of the press during the interview for his forthcoming concert "Here and Now." Prior to making the statement, the topic revolved around Filipinos who are making it abroad, particularly Charice Pempengco and apl.de.ap of Black Eyed Peas.
Though Cornejo agrees that Charice Pempengco is a superb singer, he feels that she "can do more" to promote the Philippines.
"Kapag kasing laki na siya ni Celine Dion, pwede na siyang mag-insist na kumuha ng songs written by a Filipino composer. Or get a mixing engineer or producer na Pinoy for her albums. At this point, nasa just-being-me stage pa lang siya kasi wala pa siyang power na magdemand," he said.
"Kailangan natin maghilahan [pataas]...magtulungan..."
Asked if Pempengco is the epitome of the Filipino musical artist, Cornejo flatly said, "No."
"Performer si Charice pero di pa niya nararating 'yung stature na artist na siya. Diktado pa siya...nakakahon pa siya...pero it will come, when she has powers already," Cornejo said.
He admits not being into his music but nevertheless, Cornejo believes Rico Blanco can already be called artist. He also names Gary Valenciano and Ogie Alcasid "though mas magaling siya sa business side ng music" as among those who merit the distinction.
Back to his sentiment about not getting the respect due him, Cornejo cited R&B singer Jay-R to make his point.
"Mas binibigyan [ng industriya] ng mas importansya ang, let's say...si Jay-R. Ano ba ang na-achieve ni Jay-R?"
Then realizing that his words may have come across differently from what he actually means, Cornejo clarified, " Kaibigan ko naman siya [Jay-R], but guess what? I have how many hits...."
Cornejo said that some people even have the gall to ask him to perform for P10,000. Note that for some of his contemporaries who has had lesser number of hits, that amount will never do.
"Tatlong songs daw for P10,000! Itutulog ko na lang..."
In the end, Cornejo maintained that he is not trying to pull anyone down, doesn't mean to offend or begrudge anyone of their success, and certainly not trying to put on airs for his feats.
"I'm happy where I am but I know I should've been placed somewhere else...Malay mo, baka ngayon malagay ako somewher dun... yung respect na hinahanap ko..."
Wency Cornejo is the singer of the hits "Next In Line," "Mangarap Ka," "Habang May Buhay," "Magpakailanman," "Tag-Ulan," "Without You," "Kailan Ka Darating," and so much more. All these and other OPM hits are part of the repertoire of "Here and Now" to be held April 15 at Teatrino in Promenade, Greenhills.
"Here and Now" is produced by Veda Productions. Cornejo's guest in the show is Cookie Chua. Tickets are available at Music Museum, Teatrino or Veda Productions.
