Why Koko thinks UNA is 'weak'

For re-electionist Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel Jr., United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) is weak.

This, as he mocks UNA's 'inability' to complete a senatorial slate for the midterm elections, a characteristic that he says reflects the quality of leadership that would come only from an opposition coalition.

"It was a sign of weakness," he added.

Pimentel, who went on leave as president of Vice President Jejomar Binay's Partido Demokratikong Pilipino - Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), recalled how he thought it would be impossible for him to be a common candidate.

Before leaving UNA last year, Pimentel said he knew he would be dropped eventually if he stayed with UNA while alligning himself with the administration.

"From the very start, I already said I cannot be a common candidate. I don't want to be with the person who deprived me of my complete term," Pimentel told reporters.

"Hindi ko na sinubukang mamangka sa dalawang ilog. Iyong paa ko, alam ko kung lumayo na ang dalawang bangka, I will ultimately fall into the water," he added.

Pimentel believes it would be impossible for the senatorial candidates to be endorsed by two parties.

“It’s really impossible to do that, you will endorse the candidates in this party and may do the same in other party. That is my personal point of view,” Pimentel added.

It will be recalled that Pimentel bolted UNA after the coalition allowed his rival former Senator Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri from joining the senatorial slate it was then forming with Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP).

In 2010, Pimentel traded electoral protest with Zubiri over the 12th and last seat in Senate. Zubiri resigned as senator ahead of a decision on the matter in August 2012.

Both claimed they were victims of massive cheating allegedly orchestrated by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2007 polls.
