GEORGE TOWN, June 19 — The High Court here threw out today a former civil servant's appeal against an eight-month jail sentence for causing hurt to his wife.

Judicial Commissioner Abdul Wahab Mohamed ordered for Mohammad Affandi Ismail, 40, to serve his jail sentence immediately.

“We do not have any reason to interfere with the magistrate's decision so the accused must start serving the sentence today," he said when delivering his decision.

Mohammad, who was formerly a Veterinary Services Department officer, had been out on bail pending his appeal against the case.

He was convicted of causing hurt to his wife, Siti Khadijah Ahmad Ramli, 41, in a lift of a private hospital in Bukit Mertajam on August 12, 2013.

The Magistrate's Court found him guilty of the offence and sentenced him to eight months jail under Section 323 of the Penal Code on May 30.

A CCTV recording of the incident where Mohammad was seen kicking, punching and slapping his wife in the lift became viral on social media before the man was arrested and charged.
