Winter, Caravaggio land Ascot double for O'Brien

Jockey Ryan Moore on Caravaggio (L) wins the Commonwealth Cup ahead of second placed, Adam Kirby on Harry Angel (C) and third placed, William Buick on Blue Point (R) at the Royal Ascot horse racing meet, in Ascot, west of London, on June 23, 2017

Winter and Caravaggio propelled Irish trainer Aiden O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore to victories in the Coronation Stakes and Commonwealth Cup at Ascot on Friday. Odds-on favourite Winter launched a late charge to gallop clear and win the Coronation Stakes, the grey filly finishing two and a quarter lengths clear to add to her English and Irish 1000 Guineas triumphs. "It's a hard thing to do to win two Guineas and then come here, but she's with a trainer who can do magic things," Moore told ITV. "It's very hard to do what she's done, but she's good. She's beaten some good fillies from France and America and this is a strong piece of form." Roly Poly finished second and Hydrangea third to complete a one-two-three for O'Brien in a repeat of last month's Irish Guineas at the Curragh. Caravaggio secured a sixth win in as many races in the preceding Commonwealth Cup as Moore waited patiently before pushing the favourite past the Godolphin duo of Harry Angel and Blue Point. "Ryan gave him a brilliant ride and his change of pace is unbelievable. I don't think we've ever had a quicker horse," said O'Brien, who hinted that Caravaggio could target The Everest, a new event in Australia this October which will be the world's richest turf race. Held at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, the six-furlong race will offer Aus$10 million ($7.6 million, 6.8 million euros) in prize money.
