Former Tottenham Hotspur player Jermaine Pennant has backed Spurs to sign Brentford centre-forward Ivan Toney as a replacement for Harry Kane.

Kane has been heavily linked with a departure from the London club, although nothing is finalised, yet. Nevertheless, it’s believed Daniel Levy is preparing for his departure.

Toney would certainly be an excellent replacement for Kane. But, Brentford have already slapped a hefty price tag on their star man.

Indeed, in a recent interview with the Athletic, Bees manager Thomas Frank was questioned on how much the striker is worth.

Frank said: “100m-plus? I love Ivan and it’s fantastic what he has achieved here, and there is more for him to achieve here. I’m really happy he is a Brentford player.”

“I know he is not 22,” he added. “But look at some of the best strikers in the world; Lewandowski, Benzema. It’s like good wine. They just keep getting better.

“What would you pay for a striker that guarantees you 20-plus goals? And this is 20 goals for a mid-table club. What can he do in a bigger club?”

Pennant wants to see Toney at Spurs

Now, speaking to talkSPORT, Pennant said that Toney would be the ‘perfect’ replacement for Kane. The Spurs record scorer’s contract is set to expire in June 2024, so Tottenham are likely to sell him this summer if he doesn’t agree on fresh terms.

Manchester United are firmly in the race for Kane, but Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also interested.

“£100 million is fair,” said Pennant regarding Toney’s transfer price. “The reason being, if you look at Jack Grealish, he cost £100 million from Aston Villa.

“Strikers are at a premium. You always pay more for strikers, then you get an English premium added onto that as well. With all those combined, then you are looking at £100 million.

“If you look at the best stats for an English striker, he is just shy behind Harry Kane. He is England’s number two.

“He’s similar to Harry Kane himself. If Kane was to leave in the summer, then I think a perfect fit would be Ivan Toney, without a shadow of a doubt.”

Indeed, only Kane and Erling Haaland have scored more Premier League goals than Toney this season, so there is no doubting his quality.

With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Tottenham are willing to meet Brentford’s £100m price tag. But only if, of course, they do lose Kane this summer.
