Wizards of Waverly Place writer Peter Murrieta has confirmed a long-running fan theory about Selena Gomez's character Alex Russo.

While speaking on Wizards of Waverly Pod, Murrieta revealed the theories about Alex's sexuality and her apparent chemistry with Stevie Nichols (played by Hayley Kiyoko) were true — but it was something show bosses were not able to explore on the teen fantasy series.

"I wished we could have played more with what was quite obvious to a lot of us, which was the relationship between Stevie and Alex," he said.

"We weren’t able to in that time, but it was pretty clear to all of us what that relationship was. That would have been fun."

He continued: "Disney Channel has had [LGBTQ+] characters, and they did it, but we got as close as we could. Pretty close. It was pretty much there."

Co-hosts Jennifer Stone and David DeLuise (who played Harper Finkle and Jerry Russo on the series, respectively) agreed with Murrieta's statements, adding that the show was just a little too early when it came to being able to depict an LGBTQ+ relationship.

"If it was just a few years down the line, we maybe could have played with that," Stone said.

Originally airing from 2007 to 2012, Wizards of Waverly Place followed Gomez's teenage wizard Alex Russo and her family as they tried to hide their magic powers from the world.

Gomez, who is currently starring in hit series Only Murders in the Building, recently announced that she was taking a break from social media, after fans plenty of chatter about supposed drama between her, Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber.

"I'm very happy, I'm so blessed. I have the best friends, the best fans in the whole world. I just couldn't be happier," she said during a TikTok Live.

"I don't care [about follower count]. I'm vague, I'm not – I don't care, I love who I am, and yeah, I'm going to be taking a second from social media because this is a little silly. I'm 30 and am too old for this."

Only Murders In The Building is available to watch now on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK.
