Wolves are close to signing Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo in a £29million deal, as Nuno Espirito Santo moves to strengthen his squad.

Semedo is expected to put the finishing touches to his move to Wolves later this week after Wolves had a bid for the 26 year old accepted.

Nuno has prioritised a right wing-back following the £15 million sale of Matt Doherty to Tottenham and Wolves have moved swiftly to use the funds generated by Diogo Jota's £45 million move to champions Liverpool.

A Portugal international, Semedo is set to fly into England after Wolves's Premier League meeting with Manchester City on Monday night. It is understood the fee accepted by Barcelona was around the ‎€32 million.

Ahead of the clash with Pep Guardiola, Nuno admitted that Wolves had to act quickly in the transfer window.

He said: “We still have to adjust the squad – we need to balance our squad better.

“We have already identified the targets and we know the player we want to bring and now we hope our plan continues as it did previously.

“So [chairman] Jeff [Shi] knows our target, where we need to work on the squad.

“I am confident that we will do that. It’s not about what we did before; in the last three seasons we have created an identity, a way of how we play and how we operate as a group and we have to maintain these high standards we have because new challenges and a new cycle is ahead of us.

“Things will be much more difficult than they were before, because all the teams are improving  and we have to follow up and keep going.”
