  • Cara and Cody first met as students at Tarleton State University

  • The two were friends for some time before becoming a couple and made the move to meet each other's parents three months into their relationship

  • The couple, who has been married for four years and together nine, discovered that they grew up in the same home design in towns hours apart

When one couple's journey together began, the two were just friends and students at Tarleton State University.

Cara Johnson (née Partington) was a junior when she met sophomore Cody Johnson. The two were friends for years, and both were involved in Greek life on campus.

"Our Greek organizations had a philanthropy event and at the end, we took a photo together. In the photo, my arms were wrapped around his waist like we'd been together for years," Cara recalls to PEOPLE.

"I think right then and there, we realized there could be something more. After that, it was history. Our friends couldn't believe it!"

The pair dated for four years before tying the knot on March 14, 2020 — just a day before the Dallas, Texas, area, where they were married, shut down due to COVID-19.

Both Cara and Cody are Texas natives, growing up two hours apart. They had no idea, however, just how much their childhoods had in common.

"I grew up in Waxahachie and Cody grew up in Lindale," Cara tells PEOPLE. "We had been dating for about three months before I brought Cody home to meet my family. It was during the holidays and almost Christmas time, so we figured it would be the perfect time."

The two pulled up, and Cody was amazed by what he saw. The two had never shared photos of their childhood homes, so he was shocked to discover it was just like his own.

"When we drove up to the house, Cody instantly recognized the outside design of my parents' home. As we walked through the front door of my parents' home, his jaw dropped. He knew exactly where everything was located and felt like he was walking through his childhood home back in Lindale," she says.

Not only were the houses the same design, but both Cody and Cara grew up with the same room in their respective houses as their bedroom.

"The upstairs has two bedrooms on the front of the house. He also had the right side bedroom! It was really neat to realize we grew up in the same exact bedroom layout," she says.

Cara recalls how Cody "immediately called his mom and shared the crazy coincidence."

"My parents couldn’t believe it. Cody got to meet my parents for the first time and tell them he grew up in the exact same house! What are the odds?" she says.

"Come to find out, both of our parents picked the house out of a magazine in the '90s. My dad is a home builder and told me the layout of the home was super rare and unique."

Cara's parents still call the Waxahachie residence home, while Cody's parents had moved just a year prior to the start of the couple's relationship.

"When I went to meet them that next weekend, they were so sad they didn’t live in that house anymore," she says. "They insisted on driving me by their old house and it truly was like driving by my childhood home."

Cara never imagined that sharing the fun fact between her and her husband would go viral.

"It has been so fun! All of these years later, and our families still talk about it," she says of her viral Instagram post. "We love to reminisce on the first time Cody walked into my parents' home. It’s definitely a topic of conversation every time our families get together!"
