Woman dies after tree falls on her in Marsiling Park
SINGAPORE – A woman was killed after a tree fell on her in Marsiling Park on Thursday (18 February).
According to a report by Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao, she was jogging at the time of the incident and the lower half of her body was pinned down by the fallen tree. She is believed to be in her late-30s.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to The Straits Times reported hearing a loud crack just before the tree fell. About 10 passers-by reportedly tried to lift the tree but were unsuccessful.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that they received a call for assistance at 8.15am and arrived to find a person trapped under a fallen tree.
Cutting equipment was used to extricate the person, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
In a statement, the National Parks Board said, "A 20m tall Araucaria excelsa tree of 1.3m girth fell at about 8.15am today at Marsiling Park. We are investigating the cause of the tree fall."
The tree was last inspected in April 2020 and was found to be healthy.
"We are sad that there was one fatality. Our priority now is to accord assistance to the family of the deceased," it added.
