A 61-year-old woman who was captured on a video attacking her neighbour’s flat with a chopper and subsequently tasered by the police was arrested in the wee hours of Christmas (25 December).

In a statement on Wednesday, the police said the woman had gone to her neighbour’s flat at Blk 157 Serangoon North Avenue 1 to complain about the noise level, which led to the neighbour calling the police.

Upon their arrival at around 4am on Tuesday, police officers had observed the woman hitting the gate and windows of the neighbour’s flat with a chopper.

They instructed her “several times” to drop the chopper but the woman refused to, following which an officer tasered her.

“A police officer eventually deployed one cycle of taser on the woman as she continued to act violently and refused to cooperate, endangering her personal safety and that of others,” said the police.

After being tasered, the woman let the chopper drop from her hand as she fell to the ground. She was able to stand up immediately and continued to resist arrest.

“Given that the woman was no longer armed and due to her age, the officers did not administer a second cycle of the taser on her or arrest her forcibly but advised her to cooperate with the police,” the authorities added.

The woman eventually complied with the officers’ instructions and was arrested for criminal intimidation.

She was then conveyed to Sengkang General Hospital where the doctor assessed that she did not sustain any injury. She was released on police bail on the same day.

A five-and-a-half minute clip of the incident was posted on YouTube on Tuesday by user CoinPusher Love.

The video, shot from inside the neighbour’s flat, showed the woman attacking the unit with a chopper. While the tasering was not captured on the video, what sounded like tasering could be heard. The woman was next seen sitting on the floor for a short while before getting up.

Police officers are subsequently heard repeatedly telling the woman to stay down as well as kneel down. A man, who was not in police uniform, could be later seen calming the woman down.

A shorter version of the video was later uploaded on alternative news site All Singapore Stuff’s Facebook page at 4.21pm on Wednesday.

As of press time, the video has garnered over 5,700 reactions and close to 30,000 shares.

Police investigations are ongoing.
