Woman's body discovered in water near sports club in 'unexplained death'

Police have launched an investigation after a woman’s body was discovered in water close to a sports club in Stoke-on-Trent.

The woman, whose identity has not yet been revealed, was discovered in a brook near the Abbey Hulton Sports and Social Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters, paramedics, police and a water rescue team were dispatched to the scene and an investigation into the "unexplained death" is underway.

The family of the woman has been informed of her death, Staffordshire Police said.

The force said in a statement: "We were called to an area near Abbots Road in Abbey Hulton, at 3.40pm on Tuesday.

"Sadly, a woman was pronounced dead by paramedics a short time later. Her death is currently being treated as unexplained.

"Her next of kin have been informed. Formal identification will take place in due course."

A spokesman for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service added: "Firefighters were called to Abbots Road, Stoke-on-Trent, just after 3.50pm on Tuesday.

"Sadly, a woman was pronounced dead by paramedics a short time later."
