Women-only Airport Security Lines Introduced in China

Chinas Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport introduced three women-only security lines at its terminals on Monday.

The lines, which are distinguished by pink markers, are meant to protect the privacy of female passengers and help them avoid the embarrassment of being checked by male security guards, according to China Daily.

Security checks in these lines are performed by women and designed to handle the security mishaps that often plague women. Women often bring more articles to board planes, and we usually remind them to prepare in advance for security checks, one security officer told China Daily.

The lines are estimated to help women get through security up to 15 percent faster. They are also more efficient for the airport: Officials estimate that the women-only lanes can process 150 passengers per hour, while lines with all passengers process 130-150.

Chinas Shanghai airport has a men-only line alongside the women-only. It is estimated to process male passengers 10 to 15 percent faster.

Children passing through security with their mothers will be able to use the women-only line, no matter their gender. However theres no explanation on if a transgender passenger or one who identifies outside of the binary will be able to use to pink lines.

Earlier this year, the lines were introduced in some of the terminals at Beijing International Airport and airports in Shenzhen, Kunming and Wuhan provinces.
