An extension of the Woodlands Checkpoint (WCP) will be built at the Old Woodlands Town Centre (OWTC) as part of efforts to upgrade the WCP, said the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Thursday (30 March).

An ICA spokesman said that the extension will increase overall clearance capacity and also enhance security. Two lots of private land within the OWTC, located immediately east of the current WCP, will be acquired to build the extension.

The spokesman noted that the WCP has to be upgraded to meet growing traffic needs and to ensure that immigration clearance remains secure. “Since the opening of WCP in 1999, traveller and vehicle volumes through WCP have been increasing over the years while the security threat has heightened significantly.”

A feasibility study is currently being done by ICA to determine the full extent of upgrading and redevelopment works required to construct the extension. The affected land has been gazetted by the Singapore Land Authority (SLA), which will work closely with affected tenants and owners.
