Woods made to wait for his Open return

Tiger Woods, who has been practising at Carnoustie for his return to the British Open, has an afternoon tee time in the first round

Former world number one Tiger Woods much-anticipated return to the Open after a two year hiatus will be a tardy one as his tee-time for Thursday's first round at Carnoustie is 1521 local time (1421GMT). The 42-year-old -- three of whose 14 Major wins have come at the Open with his last in 2006 -- missed the previous two editions because of injury. He will be partnered by Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and Scotland's recent Irish Open champion Russell Knox. In the absence of 1999 champion Paul Lawrie, who is ruled out through injury, fellow Scot and 1985 winner Sandy Lyle will hit the opening tee shot at 0635. Five-time major winner Phil Mickelson tees off shortly after 0800 with defending champion Jordan Spieth starting his bid for back-to-back titles at 0958 alongside Britain's Olympic champion Justin Rose and big-hitting Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand. Rory McIlroy, who lifted the Claret Jug in 2014, tees off at 1253 alongside Australia's Marc Leishman and Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen.
