The new Xiaomi phone’s borderless display covers nearly its entire body

Mi MIX

Mi MIX’s screen-to-body ratio is a whopping 91.3 per cent

In a bid to reverse its sliding fortunes in China’s ultra-competitive smartphone market, Xiaomi has dialled its innovation overdrive to 11 and engineered a new concept smartphone – the Mi MIX.

The latest addition to its flagship models was unveiled today at an event at Beijing University, which also showcased the new Mi Note 2.

But what stole the limelight was really the Mi MIX. The phone boasts a bezel-less (edgeless) display that covers 91.3 per cent of the phone’s body. And while edgeless display phones are not new, Hugo Barra, the Vice President of International for Xiaomi, claims that it has the highest screen-to-ratio display for any phone to date.

The size of the display is 6.4 inches (16.25 cm), nearly one full inch bigger than the iPhone 6/7 Plus’s 5.5 inches (13.97 cm) display. The display also offers a resolution of 2040×1080 pixel, and a 17:9 aspect ratio.

“In order to achieve this [bezel-less display], we completely overhauled the earpiece speaker, proximity sensor, and front camera with next-gen tech,” said Barra, in a Facebook post. He even took a dig at Apple with this comment in the post: “don’t worry, the headphone jack is intact for now (smiley face).”

This new redesign meant a lot of rejigging and rearranging of components.

For starters, both the front camera and speaker had to be placed at the bottom bezel of the phone. The bottom physical button had to be taken out in favour of soft keys (on-screen controls). The side buttons still remain intact, however.

The traditional earpiece speaker has been replaced with the cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology, which allows the user to listen to calls without the earpiece.

Both the piezoelectric ceramic driver and the new ultrasonic proximity sensor are embedded within the display.

The body of the Mi MIX is made entirely out of ceramic and contains no external adhesives. Rather, it is fused by “seamless connectors”.

Beyond that, the phone is powered by the new Snapdragon 821 processor which runs at 2.35GHz. The 128GB model comes with 4GB of RAM, while the 256GB version is loaded with 6GB of memory.

Both phones come with a 4,400mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0, full NFC functionalities that support P2P and Mi Pay, and a 16MP PDAF rear camera.

The 256GB version, however, comes with some cool bling: 18-karat gold rims around the camera and fingerprint sensor.

The 128GB model will retail at RMB 3,499 (US$516), while the 256GB version will retail at RMB 3,999 (US$590).
