Yahoo! Singapore 9 project to focus on charities

Change A Life.

That's what we're setting out to do in our annual "Singapore 9" National Day honours project this year.

Back for the third time running, we are honouring nine charities in Singapore in the lead-up to the nation's birthday on August 9.

We will do this by highlighting the incredibly inspiring work of charities here and the lives they transform. We will also have a directory of volunteer opportunities for you to contribute to.

In the weeks ahead, we hope that you will get involved by

a) suggesting a charity or volunteer you know, or
b) by volunteering your own time and resources to help those in need.

We are all busy with our everyday lives and everyday problems. But deep down, I think we can all agree that, in our own small ways, we can choose to make Singapore a better, more compassionate society.

Getting a child to smile, providing food and hope for a desperate family, making the unrelenting work of caregivers a little easier with better equipment or resources — these are all simple examples of how we can make Singapore better.

Many among you are already doing this — an office worker who sacrifices his lunch every day to deliver food to the needy , an actress who gives money in advance to a chicken rice hawker so that food can be distributed to the needy — and that speaks well for Singapore.

But we can always do more and help more.

Join us in this year's Singapore 9. Together, let's make a difference.

Change A Life.
