Tampines Town Council recently announced it is keeping a watchful eye on its estate cleaners. The Estate Monitoring System (EMS) reportedly “keeps cleaners in check” by tracking their routes through their smartphones.
Cleaners are required to use their mobile phones to log into the EMS when they report for work. The system monitors their whereabouts every minute and generates a report of the cleaner’s progress. At least one cleaner told the media that he felt “controlled” by the company, while netizens had concerns over cleaners’ rights to privacy.
