It feels like I may have created a new “wonder of the world” by entering a relationship. It seems there is a misconception out there that autistic people cannot have romantic relationships, and yet here I am! Want to know how? Because like everyone else, I have thoughts, feelings and emotions. Weird, right?
We met on a dating app like “normal people” would and developed feelings and an attraction towards each other over time. Next thing you know, we were together. I’m here to tell you, it can happen!
How? Communication, trust, and instinct! I discuss my autistic traits with him and discuss how I’m feeling each day with him. We trust each other and trust that we can confide in each other. He knows he can ask me anything if he’s not sure and I trust that he is asking out of genuine curiosity and willingness to learn about me.
Sadly, some people out there still do not want to date/form romantic relationships with autistic people because of the misconceptions out there relating to autism and because of preconceived ideas of who we are. Trust your instinct with dating! You deserve someone who will treat you as well as you deserve to be treated. If they start to treat you differently, negatively or start acting awkward around you when you mention your autism, trust your instinct. You deserve better!
At the end of the day, we can date and form relationships. Can it be hard to find someone? Yes, but it can happen. It’s worth the chase!
