KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu’s young entrepreneurs recently turned used plastic bottle caps into a large national flag for the upcoming Merdeka Day celebration.

The feat saw members of Persatuan Tunas Usahawan Terengganu (Patut), under the guidance of the SME Corporation Malaysia, collect 4,809 bottle caps to form a 5ft x 5ft flag (about 1.52m x 1.52m).

The youths, groomed to become successful small and medium enterprises businessmen, erected the flag at the state SME Corp headquarters at Bangunan Umno in Jalan Masjid Abidin.

SME Corp Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Hafsah Hashim and its Terengganu director Muhammad Ibrahim unveiled the youths' creative work today.

Hafsah said the effort demonstrated the patriotic initiatives of the young enterpreneurs, who also distributed 1,000 Jalur Gemilang to various business premises in the state.

“Patriotism has to be nurtured lifelong among the young, who are exposed to seamless technology like social media, so that they love the country and do not tarnish its image,” she said.

Hafsah called on youths to adopt and promote the ‘Sehati, Sejiwa’ motto so as not to compromise peace and harmony among the multi-racial Malaysian community.

“Our effort is to help develop an enterprising society for a successful nation that is built on people who can weather storms, be grateful for what we have and endeavour to improve the socio-economy of the people.” said Hafsah.
