YouTube app redesign improves vertical video playback

The Home tab on the updated YouTube app

YouTube has revealed a new version of its mobile app that introduces new tabs and a new set of video creation tools.

One new addition of note is the ability to watch full-screen vertical videos, which are shot in portrait mode on a smartphone.

Users will have access to three new tabs: Home, where you can explore and discover videos via recommendations; Subscriptions, where a new bell icon allows you to be notified when a favorite channel adds a video; and Account, showing playlists, viewing history and uploaded videos.

The new video creations tools allow users to trim footage, tint the image with filters and add music, then upload the finished product within the app.

The update is available for Android and mobile web and is said to be coming soon for iOS -- although the iOS app was updated on Thursday to allow for full-screen vertical video playback.
