Zadie Smith's just-published 'Swing Time' acquired for TV

Zadie Smith's "Swing Time" is an NBCC Fiction finalist

Author Zadie Smith is to adapt her newest novel for television as part of a deal announced Thursday.

Deadline reveals that actor Steve Coogan's film and TV production company Baby Cow has acquired rights to "Swing Time," which was released earlier this week.

The book, which takes place in North West London and Africa, tells the story of a complicated childhood friendship between two girls, one who becomes a dancer while the other travels the world and sees how the "one percent" live.

"Zadie Smith is the voice of a generation and 'Swing Time' is a thrillingly ambitious story of friendship, rivalry and fame," said Baby Cow CEO Christine Langan.

Baby Cow is behind the Oscar-nominated and Bafta-winning "Philomena" as well as TV's "The Mighty Boosh."
