PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today expressed confidence that Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein is capable of carrying out his duties as Minister with Special Functions in the Prime Minister's Department.
Zahid said he supports the new tasks assigned to Hishammuddin to help the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in executing special tasks in strengthening bilateral relations and also other functions to ensure a smooth administration of the government.
“The appointment is suitable (for Hishammuddin) and I am confident that he is able to carry out his duties,” Zahid said in a statement.
Najib, in a press statement earlier today, announced that Hishammuddin has been appointed Minister with Special Function in the Prime Minister's Department, effective today.
Hishammuddin will still retain his Defence Minister portfolio.
Najib said the appointment would enable Hishammuddin to carry out other functions on top of his duties as Defence Minister.
The Prime Minister's Department has seen a number of Ministers with Special Functions in the past. They included Tan Sri Ghazali Shafie (1970 - 1972), Tan Sri Mohd Asri Muda (1973 - 1976) and Tan Sri Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen Ismail, also from 1973 to 1976.
