KUANTAN : The zakat (tithe) is eligible only for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBTs) who have repented and want to escape the lifestyle.

Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Department (Religion) Fuziah Salleh said the zakat Al Riqab which is allocated in some states is meant to help LGBTs who wants to change.

"This matter became an issue as the public is too quick to judge them. The LGBTs should be given space to change and the public should not continue to alienate them after they have repented ," she told the media after visiting the Kompleks Penempatan Asnaf Majlis Ugama Islam and Adat Resam Melayu Pahang here today.

Fuziah said states like Selangor is assisting the LGBTs by allocating them with the zakat Al Riqab to help them get out of trouble and also as part of its duty to assist them.

The zakat for LGBTs became an issue after some quarters question their eligibility to receive the aid.

Selangor Mufti Datuk Mohd Tamyes Abd Wahid had said in a statement yesterday that the zakat for LGBTs is aimed at looking after their welfare and also help them face discrimination as well as provide them with compassion.

However, he said LGBT is a serious mental condition which needed to be treated as it is against human nature. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
