Zayn Malik confirmed on Tuesday that his two-year relationship with Gigi Hadid is over. The singer shared the news with fans in a statement on Twitter, which was polite (“Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving, and fun relationship”) and surely scripted with some help from his publicity team (“I’m grateful to all our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy.”).

Soon after, Gigi posted her own statement in which she wished him the best. It was decidedly less canned.

The former lovebirds, who called each other Zee and Gee, were a beautiful pairing for sure. They hooked up right after the model ended her relationship with Joe Jonas in the fall of 2015. Soon after, she was wearing “Z” jewelry, and they were popping up on each other’s social feeds.

In 2016, they really put their young love on display. She appeared in his video for “Pillowtalk.”
They did their first joint photo shoot — for Vogue no less. They made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala that May.

Last year, the pair appeared on the cover of Vogue, though the story, about the new generation embracing gender fluidity, created a controversy.

On Halloween, they rocked a couple costume.

Their breakup follows months of talk that they were getting engaged. Let’s face it — it’s not easy to have your potential mother-in-law giving interviews about your potential engagement. Despite their adorable birthday and anniversary posts throughout their relationship, there have been other breakup rumors. Once in the summer of 2016, a source told E! News that they’d actually broken up and reunited “multiple times” and that their issues were linked to communication problems.

Now there are no more problems with their relationship. It’s over. Long live Zee and Gee.
