Zendaya is the youngest person to win best lead actress in a drama at the Emmys. The 24-year-old was recognised at last night's virtual ceremony for her role as Rue in HBO's Euphoria. The gritty acclaimed show tackles sex, drugs, identity and trauma.

The actress, who wore a polka dot gown Giorgio Armani Prive, was clearly taken by surprise by the news and looked shaken when she made her remote acceptance speech.

"I know this feels like a weird time to be celebrating, but I just want to say there is hope in the young people out there," she said. "I know our TV show doesn't always feel a great example of that, but there is hope in the young people and I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets, I see you, I admire you, I thank you."

Zendaya's excited reaction, in which she jumped up and down in her living room surrounded by friends and family, has fast become one of the most viral moments of the ceremony.

The actress, who began her career as a Disney star, beat off stiff competition from Jennifer Aniston, Jodie Comer, Sandra Oh, Olivia Colman and Laura Linney.
