Zhang Yimou wants to make "The Great Wall" meaningful

7 Jul - His upcoming new Sino-Hollywood project may involve soldiers fighting fantastical monsters, but director Zhang Yimou has plans to make it more meaningful than just a feel-good big budget blockbuster.

As reported on CRI News, the Chinese auteur, who is helming the upcoming movie "The Great Wall", revealed that he was interested in the film because of its sentiments and theme.

"I think the story is very intriguing," said Zhang at the Beijing press conference announcing the film.

"It's hard to imagine a story about China's Great Wall being developed by a western filmmaker, but there are parts of this story that have taken my interest, especially about China's traditional culture."

Zhang stressed that though the movie may deal with a fictional storyline of how the Great Wall was supposedly built to deter monsters, he hopes to convey various elements in the film as well.

"The Great Wall" stars Matt Damon, Andy Lau, Luhan, and Jing Tian.
