Zhenjie Seafood Prawn Noodle (珍姐海鲜大虾面), well-loved prawn mee at Ang Mo Kio, closing end Mar 2023

Zhenjie Seafood Prawn Noodle (珍姐海鲜大虾面) has done quite a bit of shifting around since the start. They’ve only been in the Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood for a year but they’ve recently decided to close because of the high cost of the rental.

They were originally at Block 87 Bedok North Street 4, just behind Bedok 85, but shifted to Block 133 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 2.

The sudden news of the closure came from a Facebook post, as the netizen who patronised the store said the stall would be closing “end of this month”— Mar 2023.

When we contacted Zhen Jie Seafood Prawn Noodle directly, the owner revealed that the closure was primarily due to the increase in rental prices. The coffee shop would be handed over to another owner at the end of the month. It will also be undergoing renovation, which would incur higher rental prices for all tenants.

Since 2016, they’ve been specialising in Prawn Noodles (S$4/S$5/S$8). It’s available in both soup and dry, though it’s quite notable that the dry version is extremely similar to a good plate of Hokkien mee, but with a stronger umami flavour instead.

The owners utilise prawn mee broth in the dry version as well, so if you taste a stronger punch of seafood, it’s because of that additional touch! It’s tiny details that make so much of a difference.

What I’ll miss more is the soup version though. The Seafood Lala Noodles (S$5/S$8) that we tried left a lasting impression. The broth is slightly different from what we’re usually used to— it’s much lighter, in comparison to typical prawn noodles.

We found out that Zhenjie Seafood Prawn Noodle fries 3 different types of prawns in garlic oil first. Afterwards, he adds the chicken and pork bones in the broth. This explains the pleasant aroma when you receive your bowl, which is definitely more of a refreshing change!

The news of its closure did come all of a sudden, but the owner also mentioned that he might consider “trying it out” for another 6 months, though that is still undetermined at this point. Let’s wait for updates and cross our fingers that the closure doesn’t happen!
