In the Philippines, basketball is considered the top sport. This can be attributed to the country’s affinity with American culture. It is typical that Filipinos follow basketball games, whether it is a local or an international league. Following this trend, Philippine telco Smart Communications tapped its subsidiary Voyager Innovations in creating the mobile app PinoyHoops. PinoyHoops, free to download for Android, gives access to information on the latest standings of basketball games in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). But sadly not America's NBA. The information it provides includes real-time scores, standings, and schedules of basketball games. During an on-going game, apart from the score, it shows quarter per quarter scores, field goal percentages and fouls. Of course every basketball fanatic will be rooting for a specific team. So, upon launching the app the first time, users can choose the team he/she would like to follow. Even in the absence of an on-going game, the PinoyHoops app can be used to show the teams’ standings in the series, previous games’ scores, and other statistics such as rebounds and assists. Orlando B. Vea, chief wireless advisor at Smart, tell us:
With the mobile app, Smart is bringing hardcourt basketball action and updates closer to the millions of basketball fans not only here but also abroad.
Tweet assists The PinoyHoops app has a vibrant-looking and friendly user-interface. Apart from game-related information, a push notification feature is also available in the app for users to be notified of a starting game. Voyager also tapped the sports news portal InterAKTV to provide the latest news in the local basketball scene. Plus, basketball-related tweets also come in live through the app. Meanwhile, ‘PBA Kampihan Na’ is another Philippine basketball app available in iOS that also provides schedules of the latest games of PBA. PinoyHoops is available for Android, and will also be available for iOS soon. (Editing by: Steven Millward)
