Rumor around the royal gossip mill had it that Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie were shaping up to be the new "chosen ones" by the British royal family, but as it turns out, the pair will need to wait a little longer to be fully acknowledged as such.

On April 23, King Charles granted Queen Camilla, Prince William and Kate Middleton brand new royal titles. Middleton was named the Royal Companion of the Order of the Companions of Honour, which marked a major royal first. William and Camilla, meanwhile, earned the Great Master of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath — previously held by Charles in 2022 — and the Grand Master and First or Principal Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire honors, respectively. Edward and Sophie were not honored with any new titles, and they reportedly feeling a little upset about it.

According to Us Weekly, Edward and Sophie knew that the new appointments were on the way. “[They] knew Charles was getting ready to announce the new honors and he also told William and Kate in advance," a royal expert told the outlet. "[William and Kate] were really thankful and it gave them a boost to be acknowledged. Especially with such amazing accolades."

Middleton's honor stings for Edward in particular — the Royal Companion of the Order of the Companions of Honour is "a special award granted to those who have made a major contribution to the arts, science, medicine, or government lasting over a long period of time," and he's been a patron of the arts for a while.

“They have really stepped things up with their commitment to service over the past few years. Edward’s household were hoping he would finally get an honor,” the source added. “He’s dedicated to the arts, and that’s often overlooked with his theater work and he’s served [briefly] in the marines.”

In the meantime, Sophie and Edward will continue to bide their time in the hopes for new titled to come their way soon. “Sophie has been supportive of him during this transitional period and they are really hoping it leads to something bigger and shows they are up to the task," the royal insider concluded. “It was disappointing, the snub, but they are still as loyal as ever and know in time this will be rewarded. Charles has done nothing but sing their praises lately and it's brought them even closer as brothers.”
