Cherry Mobile One, MyPhone Uno are first Android One devices in PH

(UPDATED) A few months after rolling out in India, Android One has landed in the Philippines with the introduction of the Cherry Mobile One and the MyPhone Uno.

For the uninitiated, Android One is a mobile-device standard outlined by the search giant for developing countries. As Google senior vice president Sundar Pichai put it in a previous interview, this represents the company's attempt to "reach the next 5 billion people."

What that means for consumers, and perhaps even more importantly, for the Philippine market, is that we'll finally see locally branded devices shipping with the latest version of stock Android—Android Lollipop, in this case—and getting timely over-the-air updates for the next two years after their release. We understand Smart Communications and Sun Cellular will be pushing those updates without any deductions from Android One smartphone users' data plans.

We'll have devices that are based on Google's reference hardware design, with largely the same specs across the board. In fact, the Cherry Mobile One (same as the Mito Impact, we think) and the MyPhone Uno (Micromax Canvas A1 most likely) have the same specs except for their storage capacity, with the former getting 8GB of internal memory and the latter having 4GB of built-in storage.

Of course, the same can be said about the Nexus line, except they're not officially available in the country, not to mention the prices of the Nexus 6 and 9 are pretty steep compared to their predecessors. If we're going by existing Android One phones, the Cherry Mobile One and the MyPhone Uno should be kind to your wallet, too, with prices going for less than P5,000.

Now, we're thinking Starmobile recently introduced the less-than-P5,000 Up HD, Jump Max, and Play Club Android KitKat phones because the company had anticipated the release of Android One devices from the competition. What do you think?
