Police stop Potong Pasir petition signing session

According to witnesses, plainclothes police officers were seen at the void deck of block 108, Potong Pasir Avenue 1, where Mr Chiam See Tong conducts his Meet-the People Session (MPS).

Singapore People's Party (SPP) member Alex Tan, 23, who was present at the scene, told Yahoo! Singapore that after receiving news that people were gathering in the area, he went to the Potong Pasir Town Council at Blk 121 to speak to three plainclothes police officers from the Tanglin Division.

They told him that the petition signing could not be carried out in public as it is considered illegal, and can  only be done indoors or at the Speakers' Corner.

Some of the 30 to 40 supporters who were at the scene eventually left while a few others remained behind.

"While some people understood and left, there were others who remained in the area. Some were angry when told that they had to disperse," said Tan.

He added that SPP members were not involved in the petition signing and that he was there to try and disperse the crowd after finding out about the gathering.

The petition signing, which was to be held from 4 pm to 8.30pm, was organised by a member of a public after Saturday's polls saw the People's Action Party Sitoh Yi Pin defeat Singapore People's Party (SPP) candidate Lina Chiam by a mere 114 votes.

Yahoo! Singapore understands that members of the party's executive committee were unaware of the petition signing and were attending a "GE thank you" dinner for volunteers. On Monday, SPP chief Chiam See Tong himself also dismissed the idea of a petition for a by-election, saying it had no valid grounds.

Police confirmed that a resident had called them to report a commotion at the void deck area of block 108 in Potong Pasir.

"It was established that there was a dispute among residents arising from a petition signing earlier. Police then warned the parties concerned that what they are doing may constitute to an illegal public assembly, and advised them to discontinue and disperse immediately. Police are investigating the incident," said Singapore Police Force spokesperson, Humphrey Sew.

(Yahoo! photo/Faris Mokhtar)Potong Pasir resident Jed Senthil, 25, a tutor, witnessed the commotion and said, "The police questioned some people who were there but there was no standoff between the police and residents."

Another witness, who only wanted to be known as Jane, said, "There was no angry mob or whatsoever, just a heated debate between two guys which attracted a large crowd around them."

The Facebook online petition has garnered over 13,000 'likes'. (screengrab)

The petition organisers have since terminated the drive till further notice and have posted a message on its Facebook page, urging residents to remain calm and non-confrontational".

A Facebook page has also been set up, calling for a Potong Pasir by-election. It has garnered over 13,000 "likes" so far.

Respect the decision of the potong pasir residents. for whatever decision they had make, they will have to live with it for the next 5 years.
Holding a by-election will be neither fair to the newly MP-elect nor the residents as they had to come out to vote again. it will be a waste of resources and time.
But then, come to think of it, in 5 years time, will PP be still a SMC or will it be absorbed into another GRC? time will tell the truth in 5 years time.
Last but no least, Good health to Mr and Mrs CST. Mr CST will always be remembered as a "I am not actually a brave man, but I love Singapore and I love Singaporeans".

Applause to the Singapore Police force - thank you for maintaining the Law.
I am citizen here but have also noted "some bad behaviours problems",,,deemed "members trying to recruit new members saying - wow - do national duty" ; attempting to build "an unreal bad image on our Government!
Can be read in this website news some of the topics of this on opposition party which lost - if you lost the votes; act responsibily and be like a gentleman and NOT behave like hooligans-unruly people!!! Its so d.a.m.n low class!!!
Thank you Singapore Police - please carry out the Law!!!..

agree with both the above - the votes speaks for the residences at PP. If by-election then when will it end? then other SMC/GRC want the same... there was ample time for everyone to think clearly, the electors were there to see the counting of the votes, they re-counted - its done! wait for the next 5 years.

Dear Fellow Singaporean & residents of Potong Pasir,

The election has been conducted in an fair manner and concluded in the way voters wanted. Let's accept the result and move on.

Mr Chiam has been a great man and he has done alot for us. It is time for him to do something for himself. Take time to take care of his health and spend valuable time with his family.

Let us all wish him good health, continue to be respected and remember for all this past effort.

All the best to you & your family, SIR CHIAM SEE TONG!

When Sitoh Yihpin mentioned the "CHIAM FACTOR", he may not really know what it means. Now he can see for himself the "CHIAM FACTOR" that has made Mr Chiam such a respected MP in Potong Pasir.

      1. DETERMINATION: Potong Pasirians appreciate MP Chiam’s efforts in running the town. The perceptive ones understand that when he failed to get upgrading and other amenities, it's not because of a lack of effort because he has tried many times doing what Sitoh says he will do now. For 27 years he was confronted by obstacles placed by government policies.

We understand that it's not his fault when an NTUC supermarket was closed, bus no. 147 which looped into the estate was withdrawn to bypass the town, the POSB branch was closed, no post office served the town, etc. Potong Pasirians struggled on and suffered all these inconveniences and became even more determined not to be intimidated. MP Chiam himself set the example for determination and having a strong sense of commitment. That was why Potong Pasirians refused to be bribed by carrots that were dangled. Neither were they cowed by the sticks that were wielded at past elections. Thank you Mr Chiam for instilling in us the POTONG PASIR SPIRIT.

      2. HUMILITY: he's approachable and has no airs about him. He can often be seen eating and drinking in the coffee shops in Potong Pasir. He's not surrounded by a retinue of supporters who treat him like a VVIP. He conducts his Meet-the-People sessions at the stuffy void deck of Blk 108, not isolated in some cushy airconditioned room.

      3. SELFLESSNESS: He is a full-time MP unlike other part-time MPs who may not even be present at MPS which are run by supporters.

Potong Pasirians felt sorry for him when the tree he planted in the spirit of Tree Planting Day was removed. All through his 27 years as MP, he was ignored and snubbed by the Potong Pasir Community Club who did not have the manners to invite him to grace CC functions as Guest-of-Honour. It was always the PAP loser who was treated like a VIP while MP Chiam was treated like a nobody.

      GOODBYE MR CHIAM!
      MAY GOD BLESS YOU.
      TAKE CARE!

        @Avery Mann

Yes, I fully agreed with you! PP lost a great opposition MP Chiam. Take care Mr Chiam. Rest more and keep fit for the next election again...
      • Alfred 1 year 0 months ago
Is this true? A tree planted by Mr. Chiam removed? This is Crazy!! if the Town Council is so petty as to do such a thing, the PAP deserve to be voted out!!
      • MusicPOP 1 year 0 months ago
Why is a plant planted by Mr CHiam removed? this goes to show that PAP are afraid that CST supporters will not support them

As citizens of Singapore we should strive together to prove we are one people one nation one Singapore. We shouldn't use western political tactics where candidates attack the credibility of each party with personal attacks.
We should work together so the values of independence will not be lost, we fought the British for our independence, we must never forget the struggles that the older generation had encountered striving for our independence from The British and Malaysia.
To all my fellow Singaporeans who have forgotten our independence struggle, we should be happy to have a country instead of being a colony and a 3rd world country. To all political parties involved in this election never forget how many struggles we have to overcome to become an nation. Thank You !

Agree with you Chen. I am a Brit and I can tell you, politics at home is very....'tricky'. If the citizens are not happy, they would petition, riot and soforth. If Singapore did that, its going to damage your economy big time because Singapore is a small Country. Singaporeans dont know how lucky you are....sigh...lucky in many ways. Perhaps some of you would like to look outside of your home and see. You really have it good here so I really dont understand what you're complaining about. There is so much progress here and at a super rate. The percentage of the poor and homeless is nothing compared to other Countries. Do you know home many homeless and people going hungry in other parts of the world? Be realistic!

Sad....alot of people forgotten about all the good thgs they have received....
Always look forward for the better....you never know the best is yet to come for PP residents....stop complaining and start to believe that things will be much better than before and enjoy the fruits...be gracious in defeat...

        @Peace to all
As a Brit, do you really analyse the wide and beautiful history of England? There is so much depth and the banking history (who is controlling it now?) Was freemasonry rampant at one time or was still. Britain is a conquering country, conquered and acquired the commonwealth of countries. Even Tibet is on Britain hit list. Why Tibet, you will need to know the richness of the soil in Tibet.

Please DO NOT ever compared Britain with Singapore. I dont majored in History but I love to read about history, how the queen is the world largest land owner. You wanted to see the poor and those who are not eating well in SG, than try to join Nicole Seah party and assist her for a short period. Listen to the ground, Listen....tsunami formed with a little white crest in the horizon; very soon a 100 meter waves can reach land. Its coming ... dear foreigner stay a little longer and get to know Nicole and see if you can cry as well. By the way, God is also watching too, the earth is given to run its end and soon, the creator will take it back and all the poor will be closed to Abraham.

If Aljunied GRC & the PAP can accept that WP won, why not Potong Pasir. Let some new fresh air comes in and see what's in store for the next 5 yrs - for better or worse. Live & let live.
    • Rahim Rahmat  •  1 year 0 months ago
      Sigh!

I love Chiam See Tong. Really, really admire the man. And I wish that Potong Pasir would always remain in opposition hands.

But when >50% of the residents there already voted for Sitoh, it means he won fair and square. Even if it is just 114 votes. There is really nothing to argue about. Unless of course, there was some kind of miscarriage of justice. Nothing of that sort seems to have occurred.

Even Mr. Chiam himself admitted that there was no good reason to petition. Please dear Singaporeans, let's just accept this as fate. Let Sitoh do his job, as accordance to the wishes of >50% of the PP residents. This is respect, not only for the residents, not only for Sitoh, but also for Mr Chiam himself.

Besides, Mr. Chiam REALLY needs the rest. Health permitting, I am sure he will be back to contest in 2016. I look forward to that. If you really want him back, help the Singapore People's Party gain momentum for these next five years. Help them grow and be strong. Volunteer to help them if you really wish for it.

Please, PLEASE guys, let the results stand. True democracy is what Mr. Chiam wants for all of us, so let us follow it.

Bless you Mr. and Mrs. Chiam See Tong.

Even if PAP Sitoh wins by 1 single vote in Potong Pasir, Mrs Lina Chiam would still be the loser. Mr Chiam See Tong deserves our utmost respect. When told of the petition, he immediately declared, I will have none of it!"

PP voters be more mature and more gentlemen.. election is over let see what Sitoh can do for PP for the next 5 years... if he is better so be it....U ppl want by-election then PAP voters at Aljunied also they want by-election then how... lets move on no looking back

I still remember roughly how Mr. Chiam first came into politics. His first battle was in the Cairnhill constituency, if I remember correctly. He was so young at that time, and a prominent lawyer. I remember seeing him and his wife holding banners walking around Cairnhill area, with no other supporters at all, only both of them. He was so brave and I really really admired him. Then due to his hard efforts and caring personality he managed to win the hearts of the Singaporeans and came into Parliament since then. Every few years he soldiered on and continued to be the MP for Potong Pasir. Although I am NOT a resident of PP, I somehow VERY VERY much admire Mr. Chiam for his bravery and courage. For the love of the residents in PP, I have seen him soldiered on and aged day by day, especially now after his sickness. I feel so sad to see him growing so old now, compared to the day when I first saw him carrying banners in Cairnhill. He has really done SO MUCH for PP and he is really one man whom I admire so much - a man who is prepared to lay down his life for the people in PP without regrets. For those who have not voted his wife in for Potong Pasir, I really do not know why they did that.

May God bless you abundantly with good health and with strength in whatever you do. Take good care of yourself Mr. Chiam.

      Your admirer.

We should believe the counters of the vote tickets. What is the purpose of the petition? Apparently the organizing person does not know it's of no use in Singapore. Snap out of it! Carry on with our lives!
    • GeraldS  •  1 year 0 months ago
all these facebook petition is a real waste of time. it does not mean a thing. if the govt or anyone gives in to a facebbok petition, when will it end? PAP won PP fair and square. no one can say sitoh played punk or played underhanded. the voters spoke. if those who are unhappy with the results, they have 2 live with it as the majority won. wait 5 years to vote sitoh out. if gonna let chiam be MP again becos of some petition, the whole election process will be a joke.

Why call for a by-election ? Its you guys from potong pasir who voted Mrs Chiam out in the first place ! Totally disappointed. Mr Chiam had fight so hard for you guys for past 27 years, do you think Mrs Chiam will do less ??

Potong Pasir residents... accept the fate. A decision by PP, fair and square.

Do not make the opposition look bad

Do not let Mr. Chiam legacy be tainted.

I hope SPP is not involved in this, What is done is done, what can be recovered can be recovered, The result is final, there were no faults or discrepancies. Be gracious and do not be branded as a sore loser.
Five years later you may emerge a winner.
    • Ivan  •  1 year 0 months ago
These are my own opinions. I hope the public or netizen should stop this petition. It does not make them look good in any way. I believe our respected Chiam See Tong or SPP would never wanted to have a by-election unless there is concrete proof that some issues went wrong during the polling day. They are our leaders and I believe we should understand how our system works and abide to its rules.
    • A T  •  1 year 0 months ago
I will just said that this G.E. is 'heated' up and someone still can't get over it. I think all must respect the outcome if there isn't any 'cheating' in it. If not SPP lost PP then petition to re-elect then other parties lost also ask for re-elect. Then what you know within the next 5 years we will be having re-election till the next G.E. :)
Anyway the police did a good job when attending to the matter. At least they talk to the crowd and not send a few police cars down and get them arrested. Well good job civil servants.
    • bigmoon  •  1 year 0 months ago
      Hi voters,
Please stop the petition Since SPP has lost...Please don't make SPP become the "dishonour" party....A lose is a lose even with one vote. I am sure Mr Chiam and Mrs Chiam also don't support for the petition. Its too late to regret for the residents of PP. Opposition is an integrity party and I am sure it wouldn't want to follow the footstep of PAP which is sore loser. Hold your head high even it is lost....SPP will come back stronger in the next 5 years.
