#9 Travel to the stunning Mendenhall Ice Caves in Alaska

It’s going to take some planning and an experienced local guide to get to the ice caves under the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska. But from all accounts, the amazing landscape and surreal sights make it a trip well worth making.

The caves are formed between the glacier and the ground. Because the glacier is constantly moving and melting at, well, a glacial pace, the caves are constantly changing as well. Some caves that are around today might become inaccessible some months later, so it’s very important to have a guide who knows the area intimately.

For the less adventurous, there are easier walking trails and a visitor centre to learn all about the Mendenhall Glacier that’s slowly carving its way across the rugged Alaskan landscape.
