Cars outnumber parking spots at HDB estates

Residents at HDB estates are having a tougher time finding parking space or securing a pass for second cars. Car ownerships have overwhelmed the parking lots provided by the HDB.

The number of HDB parking spaces has grown 3.2 percent to a total of 557,000 as of June 2011, from the 539,800 recorded in 2005.

Over the same period, the majority of HDB households in Singapore with a car climbed 26.3 percent to 310,400 households. Surprisingly, households with more than one car surged 76.5 percent to 45,900, from 25,000 in 2005. The normal season-parking rate has likewise increased to 80 percent from 57 percent six years ago.

At this rate, there are far fewer parking spaces for visitors. To contact the journalist, you may send your message to editor@propertyguru.com.sg
