Downtown Line accident should not have happened: PM Lee

The accident at the Downtown Line (DTL) work site in Bugis which left two dead should not have happened, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in his latest Facebook post on Thursday.

Lee, who added that he was “very saddened” to hear of the tragedy, also expressed condolences to the families of the two victims, both nationals of the People's Republic of China.

The construction accident, the worst in Singapore since the Nicoll Highway collapse in 2004 which claimed four lives, also caused eight workers to suffer minor injuries.

PM Lee also expressed his sympathies for the nine Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel who sustained chemical burns on their lower arms in the seven-hour process to extricate the bodies of the workers. The nine have since been discharged from the Singapore General Hospital.

Lee also acknowledged the efforts of the SCDF firefighters involved in fighting the East Village Hotel fire at Marine Parade on Monday.

“They and all who have responded to the incidents have served bravely and are a credit to the Singapore Civil Defence Force,” wrote Lee.
