George Yeo to step down as Aljunied grassroots adviser: report

Former foreign minister George Yeo will step down from his role as grassroots adviser in Aljunied group representation constituency on 1 January next year, according to The Straits Times.

This was revealed during a close-door meeting with grassroots leaders of his former Bedok Reservoir-Punggol ward in October, said the newspaper.

There is speculation that current Member of Parliament (MP) for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Teo Ser Luck will replace Yeo as adviser since he is mayor of the North East District, and Aljunied GRC falls under its purview, said ST.

In addition, MP for Joo Chiat single member constituency Charles Chong is also said to have been roped in to assist in giving support to grassroots groups in the ward, reported ST.

Both Yeo and Teo could not be reached for comments when Yahoo! Singapore tried to contact them.

It was earlier reported that the People’s Action Party (PAP) had looked to former cabinet minister Lim Boon Heng to lead a team to win back Aljunied GRC in the next election due by 2016.

The May general election saw the Worker’s Party win Aljunied GRC by 54.7 per cent of the votes over the PAP team led by Yeo. It was the first time an opposition party had captured a GRC since the concept was implemented in 1988.
