Nick Cheung named Best Actor

16 Jan – Nick Cheung has proven himself to be the unbeatable yet again after named the Best Actor of 2013 by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society.

As reported on Mingpao, on 13 January, the Society awarded the actor for his portrayal of a fallen mixed martial arts fighter in Dante Lam's highest grossing Hong Kong film of last year, "Unbeatable".

The actor beat out other formidable competitors, including Tony Leung, Anthony Wong, and Anthony Chan, and won the award for playing his role with both dignity and humour.

When asked about his victory, Nick stated, "Five years ago, the Hong Kong Film Critic Society was the first organisation to give me an award [for "The Beast Stalker"]. I didn't think I would be able to receive a second one. Winning it again this time around is a great motivation for me."

However, the actor said that he would not think too much whether the honour will determine the probability of him winning similar recognition at the Hong Kong Film Awards this April.

Meanwhile, Zhang Ziyi defeated other nominees including Nina Paw, Sammi Cheng and Shu Qi for her performance in Wong Kar Wai "The Grandmaster", the movie that was also selected as the Society's Best Picture.

The result is as follows:

BEST PICTURE: "The Grandmaster"
BEST DIRECTOR: Johnnie To Kei Fung ("Drug War")
BEST SCREENPLAY: Wai Ka Fai, Yau Nai Hoi, Ryker Chan Wai Bun, Yu Xi ("Drug War")

BEST ACTOR: Nick Cheung Ka Fai ("Unbeatable")
BEST ACTRESS: Zhang Ziyi ("The Grandmaster")

RECOMMENDED FILMS: "Unbeatable", "Rigor Mortis", "Drug War", "Ip Man: The Final Fight", "The Way We Dance", "Blind Detective".
