Satellite Spots Flames and Smoke Rising From New Mexico Wildfires
An NOAA satellite captured flames and plumes of smoke rising from wildfires in New Mexico on May 3.
Footage captured by the NOAA’s GOES West satellite shows smoke rising from the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon and Cooks Peak fires in northeastern New Mexico.
The NOAA wrote that the GOES West satellite had “detected pyrocumulus plumes” forming from the fires.
The Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon fire covered 160,104 acres (250 square miles) and was 20 percent contained by May 4. The Cooks Peak fire, which is 89 percent contained, scorched 59,359 acres (93 square miles) by May 3. Credit: NOAA Satellite and Information Service via Storyful
