Singapore most liveable city for Asian expats: survey

Singapore has come out tops as the world’s most liveable city for Asian expatriates, according to a recent study.

The Republic leads the pack for the second year running ahead of a list that is dominated by Australian cities.

Sydney came in second while Adelaide and Brisbane are joint third.

Perth (6th) and Canberra (7th) are the other Australian cities on the list by human resources consultancy ECA International, who is known for its provision of international HR data.

The countries are ranked based on factors such as climate, availability of health services, housing and utilities, isolation, access to a social network and leisure facilities, infrastructure, personal safety, political tensions and air quality.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong lags behind in 11th on the list despite a jump from 14th last year.

New Zealander Ben Burrowes, who has been working in Singapore for three years, believes the Republic is an ideal place to live and work despite the rising cost of living.

The 29-year-old told Yahoo! Singapore: “It’s a great place to live in for expatriates like me. The people are great and everything is comfortable and safe here.

“The cost of living is definitely high and that’s probably the only cause for concern. But I think it sort of balances out as some things are still considerably cheap.

“And the fact that it’s so centrally located in Asia makes it convenient to travel around the region,” he added.

However, some insist life as an expatriate in Singapore is not always a bed of roses.

Abhishek Mehrotra, who comes from India, told Yahoo! Singapore: "It's far too expensive here.

"Despite the popular notion that expats earn a lot of money, there are some of us who earn average salaries," he added.
