Singapore ready to bid for SEA Games in 2015

Pending Cabinet approval of its budget, Singapore is likely to bid for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2015, said Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) secretary-general Chris Chan on Monday.

Chan was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a sports event where last year’s Youth Olympic Games chairman Ng Ser Miang received a Distinguished Service award from the United States Sports Academy.

Initially poised to host the 2013 SEA Games, Singapore bowed out of the bid citing delays in the completion of its new Sports Hub, which is now scheduled to open its doors by April 2014.

Construction for the 55,000-seater Sports Hub commenced in March this year following the demolition of the old National Stadium.

Said to be one of Singapore's largest construction projects, the main dome of the hub, which spans 320 metres across and 80 metres high, will be completed by end 2013, reported Channel NewsAsia.

Singaporeans, however, can get a glimpse of the iconic roof by next May.

The Straits Times quoted Frederic Perez, director of construction firm Dragages Singapore, as saying that the steel structure of the dome will be visible sometime in May next year.
