New sporty headphones let you hear the outside world

Blasting music through your earbuds while jogging on the treadmill is one thing, but when cycling or running outdoors, you may prefer to be more aware of your surroundings. Now a new set of headphones claims to offer crisp sound without tuning out the world.

While most headphones aim to block ambient noises for better sound, the new Momentum from X-1 Audio, takes a different approach. The headphone opens the ear up to ambient noises while still providing clear audio, all with the mission of keeping athletes safe on busy roads.

The set includes three sizes of ear fins to help keep the headphones in place during even the most rigorous of activities. Use just the ear bud, or add a fin, or even two. An optional silicone earbud cover allows users to vary how much ambient noise comes through, while the cord illuminates with light for visibility when running in the darker hours.

An inline microphone allows for hands-free calls, in addition to a volume control adjustment and playback. The Momentum is available internationally for $49.99.

Other options for outdoor exercisers include accessories such as Airbuds, which snap on top of your earbuds to deliver distortion-free music while allowing access to some ambient sounds. Or try earHero, which incorporates two tiny speakers, one of which slides into each ear canal. Because of their tiny size, listeners can still hear the outside world, as well as potentially reduce risks of hearing loss, since the earphones don't seal the ear.
