'Taxi' vs. 'The Monkees': Vote for the Best TV Theme Songs

With March Madness in full swing, we decided to do a TV-themed bracket of our own: a no-holds-barred tournament to determine the best TV theme song of all time. After lots of heated debate, we've selected and ranked 32 of the most memorable TV theme songs ever, pitting them against each other in a winner-takes-all bracket. Over the next few weeks, we're asking you to vote for your favorite theme songs until we get a winner -- and a few songs stuck in your heads.

(6) "Taxi" ("Angela")

The jazzy, mellow stylings of Bob James weren't the original intended theme for the hit show starring Danny DeVito, Tony Danza, and Andy Kaufman. In fact, the original title sequence was decidedly more upbeat, but the producers preferred the more melancholy vibe of this composition, initially meant for the third episode. It's especially fortuitous that the track is so memorable, as it distracts from the almost GIF-like repetition of the short footage of the Sunshine Cab Company car going over the Queensboro Bridge.

Supposedly, people say these guys monkey around, but we're too busy singing along with their theme song to put that notion down. An earworm like few others, the track and the imagery surrounding it established this quartet as a bit more goofball than, say, The Beatles. Whether you saw this when it aired in the '60s or you watched it throughout the '80s during repeats on Nickelodeon, you can admit it: You and your three BFFs totally did their silly walk while singing this theme. And, yeah, we know about your Davy Jones crush, too, ladies.
