Winter 2024

Delicious in Dungeon

Genres: Adventure, Cooking, Fantasy Comedy

Release date: 4 January, 2024

In a fantasy world where dungeon exploration is the norm, a group of unlucky adventurers are saved from the maws of a dragon thanks to the sacrifice of their teammate, Falin. Due to this, the team falls apart and two members leave, with only the leader Laios, the locksmith Chilchuck, and the elf spellcaster Marcille, remaining.

Indebted to Falin, who is Laios's sister, the remainder of the team plan to return to the dungeon level with the dragon to save Falin from being digested. But there's a big problem: the majority of their supplies were left behind.

How will they sustain themselves as they traverse each level? If you've watched this particular 2023 anime, you'll be familiar with Laios' solution: to use the monsters as ingredients for their meals. Yum.

A Sign of Affection

University student Yuki Itose has lived in a separate world amongst the rest of her peers as she was born deaf, and as such, has rarely ever interacted with people or left the confines of her city. However, the mundane simplicity of her life is upended upon meeting the mysterious and captivating Itsuomi Nagi, who has travelled the world and speaks multiple languages, and his budding interest in learning sign language from her.

Drawn to each other despite their differences, Yuki and Nagi begin to foster a relationship built upon a fascination of each other's experiences in life. Will there be onions?

Solo Leveling

Genres: Dark Fantasy, Action, Adventure

Release Date: 7 January, 2024

Based on a popular Korean web novel, Solo Leveling tells the story of Sung Jinwoo, a notoriously weak hunter in a world where he must partake in an endless struggle for survival as he battles against monsters to protect the world from utter annihilation.

However, Jinwoo finds himself chosen by a mysterious program called 'the System', giving him the extremely rare ability to level up in strength and turn every monster he dispatches into his loyal shadows (so, technically solo levelling). With this ability in hand, he sets off on a journey to discover the secrets hidden within the dungeons, as well as the true source of his god-like power. From the trailer, it looks like there will be some pretty gorgeous animations and fight scenes, so this is definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

But not only that... she's actually the hidden boss of the game.

Uninterested in the romance aspect of her new reality, Eumellia must now dedicate herself to avoiding becoming the hidden boss and the limelight that comes with it. But can she achieve the peaceful life she wants to have when she's overpowered enough to take down the whole country? Or is she going to add every character to her domain like the OG Bakarina?

Spring 2024

Black Butler: Public School Edition

Genres: Dark Fantasy, Historical

Release Date: April 2024

Black Butler fans, rejoice! After seven years of waiting for the next instalment of this historical dark fantasy by mangaka Yana Toboso, Black Butler: Public School Edition will entice fans, new and old, into the gritty and mysterious world of Earl Ciel Phantomhive, who is in service to the Monarchy as the "Queen's Guard Dog" alongside his devilish butler, Sebastian Michaelis in 19th century England.

After the events of his dangerous voyage across the Atlantic, Ciel receives a letter from Queen Victoria telling him of certain mysterious disappearances occurring within Weston College, one of England's top public schools, including that of her relative Derrick. Tasked with solving this case, Ciel and Sebastian infiltrate Weston College, but there's more to this matter than what it seems...

While not technically "new", it's been so long since the last season, it might as well be, and fans of the series everywhere should be excited for this.

A Condition Called Love

Genres: Romance, Slice-of-Life

Release Date: April 2024

Hotaru Hinase is a first year high school student who doesn't know anything about romance, but she doesn't seem to mind since she treasures her family and friends above all else. For all intents and purposes, Hotaru is content with living without the experience of falling in love.

However, an encounter with the handsome yet unusual Hananoi-kun in the snow changes Hotaru's views. Grateful for her act of kindness towards him, Hananoi-kun immediately asks her out to be his girlfriend, and even with her rejection, strives to get into her good graces.

With his efforts moving Hotaru's heart, could this boy teach her about love?

Kaiju No.8

Genres: Action, Sci-Fi

Release Date: April 2024

Godzilla-like monsters called "Kaiju" have been terrorising Japan for age, and Kafka Hibino has spent his adult years cleaning up after their rampages and subsequent demise at the hands of the elite military unit "Defense Corps".

Kafka (not that Kafka, chill, you Honkai Star Rail fans) is unsatisfied with this job, however, as he's always dreamt of being part of the Defense Corps. Although his dreams seem to have been swept away alongside the guts of monsters he cleaned up after, an encounter with a young junior recruit reignites his desire to join the military once again.

But things don't turn out the way Kafka wants when he is infected by a parasite-type Kaiju — giving him the power to turn into a humanoid monster. Could this power be the key for him to realise his lifelong dream? Or is he going to become the hunted now? And will he eventually turn into a giant skeletal centipede and wipe out 80 per cent of the humans on the planet? So many questions, but we'll have to wait for Spring 2024.

Summer 2024

Ramen Akaneko

Genre: Comedy

Release Date: July 2024

Tamako has found herself in an interview at a ramen shop run solely by cats. If that's not unique enough, here's the catch...she's more of a dog person than a cat person. So what's in store for her when she's hired on the spot to be the dedicated cat caretaker?

We're not saying this anime would end the debate if cats or dogs are better (they're all loveable floofsm after all), but cats do seem to have the edge in cooking (whether it be the Palicos from Monster Hunter or Yukichi from The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today). Hope you have a ramen joint handy when you eventually get the craving for Japanese noodles while watching this.

Other titles have no specific release date yet!

Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture

Genres: Sci-Fi, Action, Mecha

Once believed to be a cancelled project, Code Geass: Z of the Recapture was first announced way back in 2020, followed by near radio silence until very recently.

Still, come 2024, Code Geass fans can finally enjoy a new addition to the world of Lelouch Vi Britannia with the retitled "Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture"!

Not much is known about the plot, but the anime will take place after the events of the movie Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection.

Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror

Genres: Horror

First announced five years ago, Toonami, in collaboration with adult swim, has finally revealed that the long awaited adaptation of Junji Ito's most popular horror manga Uzumaki will be released in 2024!

The anime will follow the story of Kirie Goshima and Shuuichi Saito, as their quaint country town of Kurouzu-cho is seemingly infected with an obsession with spirals. This obsession will prove deadly to the town and all its inhabitants, leading the two to witness their family and friends spiral into madness.

Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf

Genres: Adventure, Fantasy, Romance, Drama

A remake of a beloved series released in 2008, this anime will retell the story of Kraft Lawrence, a travelling merchant whose main goal in life is to gather enough money to start his own shop.

One night during one of his travels in a town called Pasloe, he chances upon a 600-year old wolf deity named Holo, who has grown disillusioned and isolated as the town she served as their Goddess of Harvest has moved on to different means to increase their harvest. The duo agree to travel together, with Holo's wisdom helping Kraft increase his profits, and Kraft aiding Holo into seeing how much the world has changed. Given the original series' good reception, this remake will have a lot to live up to!
