12-Year-Old Boy Who Ran Away from Home Found Safe After Spending the Night in Ohio Target

A missing 12-year-old boy was found inside a Target store in Ohio on Monday morning, according to police.

The boy, whose identity has not been publicly released, was discovered by an employee opening the store at 8100 E. Broad Street around 6:15 a.m. local time, The Columbus Dispatch and NBC affiliate WCMH reported.

Police said that the boy had spent the night alone in the store after running away from home, per the outlets.

Target said in a statement obtained by CBS affiliate WBNS and WCMH that upon the discovery, the store "contacted law enforcement upon finding this child and cared for him until authorities arrived.”

It remains unclear how the boy managed to slip into the store and go undetected overnight before the store's opening Monday.

Neither the Columbus Police Department nor Target immediately responded to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Police said the 12-year-old's parents had filed a missing persons report on Sunday night, per WBNS and The Columbus Dispatch. Once found, he was taken to Franklin County Children's Services, where his parents were able to pick him up.

"The child’s parents are happy that he is safe," Jennifer Watson, a police spokesperson, said in a statement, per the paper. NBC News reported the family was reunited with him on Monday afternoon.

There were no reports that the boy was injured, and police do not anticipate filing charges against his parents, WBNS and The Columbus Disptach reported.
